KUPPET BBF Committee Disbanded After a Standoff
KUPPET leadership with its own held an impromptu election to replace its BBF committee after a standoff during the branch’s AGM at Ngerenya Secondary school in Kilifi County.
A section of members who were not satisfied with how things were being done by the committee expressed their dissatisfaction causing a spat. The members said that the branch was not managing the funds appropriately with the committee awarding themselves powers over the funds and changing the kitty’s rules without involving the members.
The teachers said that they have been making monthly contributions of 200 shillings but whenever they have an emergency they are denied the 20,000 shillings entitled for emergencies.
The complainants threatened a walk-out unless the matter was addressed forcing the branch officials to call for an election that yielded a nine-member committee..
A teacher from Malindi secondary accused the officials of mismanaging the funds.
Another teacher from Ganze accused the executive of handpicking allies in the committee to oversee the mishandling of the funds.
He added that the secretary to the committee has been disregarding the constitution and instead of giving the members the stipulated 20k during emergencies he has been giving them 5 or 10k which is way below the amount stipulated.
Yet another teacher from Malindi expressed hope that the newly elected committee members will work for the welfare of teachers.
When the executive was contacted, he denied the mismanagement allegations saying the teachers were just agitated.
He said that new committee members have been elected to replace the other team and members are comfortable with them. The committee will work together with KUPPET officials to ensure it works to everyone’s satisfaction.
